FAMILY TREE  AUSTRALIA

There are Family Tree Charts relating to :-

1.  Pagrams in Australia from 1853,

2. Pigrams & Pagrams in England from 1678 who are our relatives and ancestors,

3.  Pegrams in Australia from 1855 who are also related to the Pagrams ,

4.  Harts in Australia and England who are the ancestors of my Mum Grace  Eileen Pagram (nee Hart).

5.  Turners in Australia and England who are ancestors of my wife Pamela Joy Pagram (nee Turner).

6. Simmons in Australia and England who are ancestors of  Pamela's Mother Lillian Frances Simmons.

PAGRAM

The foundation of our family history in Australia, is based on Martin Pagram (1835/1908) who was the first Pagram to move to Australia in 1855.  He followed his married Sister (Mary Barnard) who migrated to Australia with her husband (Newling Barnard). They departed on 9.5.1853 on the "Lady Kennaway" (see below) and disembarked in Melbourne on 15.8.1853.

According to the NSW State Government records, Martin, at the age of 19, was an assisted Migrant who travelled on the "Bengal" (see below) in 1855 and disembarked in Sydney.

On his arrival, he lived with his Sister in Hawthorn - a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria.

You will notice that the Charts place emphasis on the paternal side of the Pagram History. In other words, I followed the Pagram name. For example, once a female Pagram married and changed her name, I ceased to follow the new family. It just gets too complicated.

PIGRAM

If you have a look at Chart 1A, you will notice that Martin's father Thomas was born a Pigram and must have taken on the surname of Pagram when he married.

Going back two further generations, on Chart 1AAA, you will see that Thomas's Great Grandparents were James & Sarah Pigram. The family is now traced back to about 1678.

PEGRAM

Martin's Brother John Pagram (1832/1906) also migrated to Australia with his young family on the "Constitution"and arrived in Sydney 27/5/1855. For reasons unknown, he adopted the surname of PEGRAM. He created a dynasty of Pegrams in the Monaro area of South Eastern NSW. So I would be pleased to hear from any Pegrams who have traced their families back to John? So to all Pagrams and Pegrams in Australia - there is a goodly chance that many of you are related to each other.

Also, there is a family of Pagrams in Perth, Australia who migrated from the UK in 1965. I have now included them in an expanded section of family trees connected to "Pagrams in the United Kingdom".    It would not surprise me if there are more Pagrams who can be included on these charts with your help? Please let me know if you can help with this.

HART

My Mother Grace Eileen Pagram (nee Hart) was born near Port Fairy in Victoria. The Hart Family started in the Western District of Victoria with the arrival of James Hart (1815/1887) and his family from Charfield in Gloucestershire. They arrived in Portland 9th April 1853 after a terrible voyage on the "Eliza" (see photo below) where 41 passengers died including his wife Elizabeth Shipway (1819/1853).

TURNER

My wife's family made there way to Australia with the arrival of William Turner 1848/1923) around 1898/1899 from Newark Nottinghamshire settling in Gippsland in Victoria. He had served a trade as a Shoemaker in England but took to Farming in Gippsland. (Below is a photo of the family in Gippsland.)

SIMMONS

My Wife's Mother Lillian Frances Turner (nee Simmons) (1914/1993) was from the Bendigo Region of Victoria. Her Grand Father Edward Simmons (1854/c1910) was originally from St Mary Hoo in Kent England. He was serving in the British Army in India and upon his discharge in late 1876, he chose to migrate to Australia arriving on the "Bangalore" (photo below) in Melbourne 7th January 1877.

You can study this Site in two ways.

1. You can go to "Browse this Site" and click on to the various Charts.

2. You can go to the "List of Names", search for your own name or a person of interest to you and click on to their Chart.  You will notice that there is a "camera icon" beside some of the names. By clicking the camera, you will view a photo of the person. This is just new. I would invite any Pagrams interested to send me their family photos and I will be only too pleased to add those to this site.

Enjoy.

Please note that this data can always be improved. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can provide additional family history that we could add to this Site. Please refer to "Contact the Author".
